A spokesperson for Prince Harry and his wife Meghan said Wednesday the couple were involved in a car chase while being followed by photographers, according to the Associated Press.

The couple's office said the pair and Meghan's mother were followed for more than two hours by half a dozen vehicles after leaving a charity event in New York on Tuesday.

Both were pictured Tuesday night where Meghan received an award from the Women of Vision Awards.

Reports claim the chase happened for two hours around Manhattan.

It said in a statement Wednesday that the chase "resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD officers."

It called the incident "near catastrophic."

According to CNN, a law enforcement source described the chaos of the paparazzi - riding in cars, motorcycles and scooters. CNN reported some of the scooters and motorcycles took to the sidewalks pursuing photos of the couple, who were traveling to a friend's home after the event with Meghan's mother.

The news organization reports that a police unit known as a "protective team" that was following the couple had to utilize evasive maneuvers to get away from the photographers.

Video published by TMZ shows the couple with what appears to be a security member asking photographers to back up from a yellow cab that ultimately drives away with a police cruiser following close behind with its lights and sirens on.

The incident comes some ten days after the prince's father, King Charles' coronation.

Harry's mother, Princess Diana, was killed in 1997 in a car crash in France. Harry has long blamed the paparazzi for his mother's death. The royal's limousine tried to speed away from photographers chasing the vehicle prior to her death.
